Clayton Memories

Take a stroll down Memory Lane in Clayton, Missouri

Aubrey Yawitz

Interview by Ricky Kuehn

Aubrey YawitzAubrey Yawitz has been a Clayton resident since moving to the city 62 years ago. A local of St. Louis, Aubrey grew up in University City and later attended Washington University. After returning from service in World War II, Aubrey and his wife moved onto Central Avenue in Davis Place. “There used to be a streetcar line in front of this street (Central Avenue).. The old Kirkwood-Ferguson street car. As a result, there were very few houses built along this street; people wanted to build houses in other parts of the subdivision… When they took the streetcar out… more houses, newer houses were built. And generally, a house on this street is newer than another house in the subdivision chosen at random.” Aubrey’s memory of the streetcar was from his days before he moved. He frequently traveled on streetcar lines that ran through downtown Clayton and Davis Place. Little did he know, he would eventually end up living right next to it.
